yeah so its like dads learning curve. He started out with the right intentions...like most of us! Thinkin that turning the lights off is enough. He grows from Homer Simpson to mister greenpeace. A story can be generated over time.
How we gonna sort the structure of the presentation. Maybe split it between the explanation slides then the story board? do you have a preference? can i do the story board?

I've GOT IT
HOW ABOUT...
present dad character as normal
then for ad, he is still the dad character (cos changin it isnt gonna wash, they will see we made a mistake), and at first the ad is just taken as being one to promote turning lights off
but this is just the start of the story for the Dad character, through the website and further ads he is going to go on a journey over time of discovering that turning the lights off wasn't enough....that printers waste trees etc
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Blog sites been messed up for a while not loading for hours,

RATIONALE FOR FINAL PROJECT CHOICE
The brief we decided to go for was the Stuff-O-Meter brief because we felt these ideas had the most potential. Our initial idea was to use a father figure that would get the environmental facts across to the consumer. This was because it is always your dad who is telling you to switch off lights, etc. The character would be situated on a website that would include all the information on the products “cradle to grave” information as well as a feature to compare the energy efficiency of a number of products at the same time.
After some discussion we decided that we needed to promote the website, as many people wouldn’t just go on the website for fun. We came up with the idea of publishing a magazine once a month that would give information about a different appliance for every issue. Every cover of the magazine would include the father figure with the appliance of the month. Then, at the back of the magazine there would be stickers that could be used around the house to stick on appliances to remind people to turn them off. For example, glow in the dark stickers for stand-by buttons so that when you turn the light off they glow and catch your eye. Our most developed idea was for an advert. This would also include the father figure along side appliances. For the style of the adverts we decided to base them on an etch-a-sketch, as this is a non-electrical toy. In these adverts the appliances would be animated so that they can interact with the father figure.
The statement that is basis of our ideas is to use less electricity, save money and therefore save the environment

Here it is so far, I've put the door in for a stage for the acting of your story Cath. I'm thinkin the lines of the skirting board are too much, what do you think about me taking them out? Then putting the lines in linking the life of the printer from production to the man will be more obvious

KERRIE

KERRIE
Nice
That powerstation is shit hot! i like you've put the guy in there too, we might as well use him and explain what would be in place of him, ive been trying to find a pic of a possible dad, but no luck, ill do some etcha sketch!
For the sake of arguement, and to give us some kind of initial structure to work around I have stolen one of the character's from the apple ads. What do you think to this...

I want to give it more narrative though so i'm going to do more, your story is great Cath could be really successful, I think a tag line at the end to do with the printer and paper will give it more focus tho, especially when a viewer is going to be EXPECTING a comment about turning off the lights

Printer Dog Animation Idea
Ideas
Came up with one idea with the man in it:
1. the man walks into his study
2. sits down at his computer and starts typing away.
3. decides he wants to print so reaches into a draw and pulls out a few trees and feeds them into his printer.
4. using all the trees he only gets one print out. (I was going for how it takes a lot of trees to produce the energy and the paper used to print on)
5. he then picks up the print out looks at it then walks out of his office as if its normal to him.
6. He then reaches around the door again, so you only see his arm, to switch off the lights.
7. a message then comes up to say something along the lines of 'save energy, switch off lights'.
(I was trying to use the irony that people realise that leaving lights on saves energy but not limiting what you print.)

Dad Problem
Maybe we need to pick a Dad then...find a pic? illustrate around him...because we want good interation between the character and appliance
KERRIE
Yep, we need to know what hes gonna look like. Are we still gonna go with a real dad and an animated appliance? (like your power plant by the way!)

Story
Thats the hard bit, coming up with the story! I keep forgetting about the man now, I keep drawing printers and stuff!
i'm putting all my sketches on the one post or we'll just end up with millions! Keep checkin back down there! Man, need a giant computer screen so I can see this whole blog at once!!
You get a story Cath i'll try drawing it, i'm getting quite obssessed with this game, going to be a bit of sleepless night! I think we need the man in, cos its going to be a very bland image just the line drawings. But incorporating film aswell could end up quite beautiful, also gives a contrast of colour.
Come on illustrators, you know about stories more than us...

Kerrie's Etch-A-Sketches
I've just done this quick sketch, testing the the limitations of the etch a sketch, I think i'll have to spend a lot more time doing one!

A landscape of dying trees. Don't think its obvious enough what it is, without supporting dialogue or something...

Think this is quite succesful, a power plant, spent a lot more time on this...

Printer / Shredder
Ash that's great, well done! The sound is really good too...have you got a printer running in the background or somehting or is it just picked up off the paper? The repetition works well, makes it hit home.
I'm just about to start my drawings, what are we going for? Printer/Shredder? Maybe we should just pick which ever one we personally prefer and think we can put the best narrative to, then still go ahead with picking the best idea tomorrow? What do you think?

I was thinking...
Ash, thats really effective. Nice work! Its a really good idea to show, blatantly, whats happening to the environment. Might be an idea to go down that route so that we're a bit closer to the brief.
Just posted these pics from the Scottish Power ads, characterisation of appliances. Working on some drawings at the mo too (Hand drawn and etch a sketch)

The Printer
Printing can be the most energy intensive steps, so you should only print the pages you need. Edit documents on-screen to save unecessary printing. It's lifetime waste includes electricity, paper.
Etch - A - Sketch
An idea for the illustration style of the animated appliances, using the etch-a-sketch limitations. This also supports our environmentally friendly ethos, a non-electronic computer. Typography could also be created in this way. This is my TV...

We could draw on etch a sketch then screen grab into illustrator and trace over so they can be enlarged

-Header for magazine (typographics)
-Designs for website (features, animations)
-Sticker designs
-Feel of the magazine
-articles
-layout
-where would the magazine be placed?
-how can it be eco freindly whilst been consumer freindly
-name for magazine
- character statement (whats he like? could use existing characters looks and personalities to build an image up)
-designs for the magazine format, (how would it be bound? materials? size?)

I think the idea to incorporate games and silly things into the website is a good idea. The websites Leila's put on a great strating point for ideas. Not overally convinced on the dinner party one tho! I think if we are aiming for a target audience of students and below we need some way to make it fun and interesting.

Cath
How do you imagine the Dad?
I imagine him bald with 'horseshoe' hair round his sides. quite northern, silly but series about saving money and hence the environment. Quite understated, Karl Pilkingtonesque but obviously not as stupid. Post here how you see him.
one idea
I've been thinking over the weekend and my idea is to 'villanize' household objects. I was thiking for posters like a fridge in a classic burglar outfit (no eyes or anything not making it cheesey just slightly weird) with a slogan something like 'Are you being robbed by your fridge?' check it out at dadknows.com, somthing like that. you could go on, like 'Are you being held to ransom by your iron?' i think it could appeal to the young and also anyone upto 30, i think there's lots of scope, anywho depends what you all think.
^ I like this idea, I think that could work, definitely something to think about anyway.

More Research
The 6 degree challenge site is quite a good idea. The fact that it says 'tell 6 friends and change the world' makes it kinda like one of those emails you get that say send this to 10 people or such a thing happens (usually something stupid like 'you will die'). Although these do annoy the hell out of me, people always seem to send them. Ours could be send this to so many people, to create awareness, and you'll get something, a prize or something, nothing lame though. I agree Cath, we've got to think of a way to engage the target audience and get them interested straight away.
Here are some sites I found that are trying to make enery saving fun... not too sure if they're succeeding though, but take a look.

Hey I've read all your posts and there is some good ideas. I like the dancing dad video and it got me thinking. I was on a site a while ago and then this pop up came up saying 'Tickle the fat kid 'till he barfs' so I did then i won an IPOD. I din't bother with the IPOD 'cos it's obviously a con, but i thought it's a good way to get people to a website. He starts shaking then pees himself and then eventually pukes if you click the mouse fast enough. Maybe we could use the same concept? Make the dad dance in a crazy way, or just make the dad do something that is slightly odd and then when they do it will take them to the website. What you think?
Suggestions
Loving the dancing dad!
Agree we need a way to bring together all the different ideas together. If we are aiming at students I'm not sure that the website is the best place to start as I do't think students will go on an energy saving website with the only reason being to look for energy efficiency. So we need a way to get to students. Packs given out at fresher's fairs could work but how many people will look at those if they wern't attention grabbing. I'll keep thinking on this one.
We also need to decide the best way to keep the technical information interesting. Keeping on the student angle we could refer to the money wasted on certain appliances as the number of pints or tesco vouchers. Anyway I'll keep thinking n sketching!

Focusing on the Brief
I agree, we really need to remember the brief and not get carried away and just exhaust every idea we've come up with. We can pitch it focusing on one thing, so we are meeting the brief exactly, and then suggest our other ideas for expansion. This will show we have carefully approached the brief whilst also considering where it could develop. The list of things still seems slighty 'bitty', like you said Ash, we are missing something...that could encircle the whole thing.
I think that could be the character though, without a visual image of him, its hard to get a grasp of the concept.
I think we all have our own little image in our heads, perhaps tomorrow, for a fun five minute exercise we could draw a quick caricature of what we imagine the character to be like. It'll be quite interesting to see if we've been thinking along the same lines, and will get us back into the swing of things too ready for the week ahead!

Formats considered so far...
Stickers
screensavers
adverts
website
leaflets
Is there something we are missing which would perfectly sit? should we concentrate on just one product for now? or still press ahead with aiming to create awarness on general energy saving? i think the first because thats what the brief asks.

2 more ideas
The Powergen adverts are trying to achieve a similar thing using a person, you know the ones with Simon Day from the Fast Show (i cant find any pics)
I like this video, how there is a lot going on, maybe we could create something similar showing people hoovering, washing machines spinning, and juxtapose this with trees been knocked down, ozone layer opening up, ice caps melting, etc these idents wouldnt be aiming at any particular product, they would simply be raising awareness.

Thoughts
I agree Ash, it'll definitely work better if we aim it at the younger generations (students), at least to begin with. If we make the dad someone we can relate to hopefully others will be able to relate to him too. The hard is part is making him funny and engaging so that people get interested in it in the first place. I've been trying to think of fictional dad characters that everybody likes, on TV/in films/books or whatever, but I've only been able to think of a few, apart from the others; Jim Royle, family guy dad.... Darth Vader?!?!?
I think Kerrie mentioned this, we need to think about how we show what will happen to the environment as a result - bring it back to the brief a bit more. We can't just list stats because noone will want to do lots of reading, although they can be put on the website anyway. This is a bit trickier... I'll keep thinking!
To get people interested, they're going to want to know how it will benefit them, what they'll get from. People don't like doing something for nothing, so this would probably have to be to do with saving money. And like Finn said, the stuff in the pack has got to be fun too, an illustrated book is quite a nice idea, using recycled materials.

ADBUSTERS

SOME NICE IDEAS THERE FINN-KEEP EM COMING YOU'VE GOT ME THINKIN
http://www.adbusters.org/home/
A great site against large corporations (there is also a magazine too, which is really really good, ill bring one in tommorow). The Adbusters site manages to create the idea of a united community against corporations, it has humourous articles aswell as serious articles, Adbusters also create there own products aswell as distributing factsheets and other promotional materials.
Adbusters is more aimed at the 20 somethings- it also organises events and commisions artists to help promote them-Banksy created one of there most famous magazine covers. I would say if we were gonna do a site maybe getting Bnaksy to show the dad in one of his stencils would really hit at the youth group.
I like how they have done there promotional material, the balance is ALMOST right between having it so it informs and so that it is worth having.
Ash
More suggestions
I've been thinking about authoritive figures who people would respects and listen to. The World War posters are an obvious one, but that might be a bit too much. People don't like being told what to do, they like the freedom of choice. So we need to make them want to care, and not force them to.
I like the idea that Ash had of an ongoing story like the Apple ads or like those Daz adverts. Maybe like a routine thing; what's dad got up to today? And I think your right Leila, it definately needs to be humerous. Maybe the character doesn't realise he's saving energy, having an ignorant homer type character whose intentions are good. He could be lazy like homer, showing that you dont have to put that much effort in at all to help the environment.
I don't think electrical sites would like or allow an eco-friendly company to post on their site. I could be wrong though, by putting Dad on their site, they might show that they care and want to make a difference, even though it's their business.
To make it different from other junk mail, we could possibly have some fun things in there to do to get the interest of the public. Some games or crosswords or spot the differnce (a healthy landscape and a polluted one). Stuff like that. And if it isnt a boring leaflet, but a nicely illustrated booklet with facts and shiz.
Haha that dancing dad video was excellent, just watched it, that's exactly the kind of image we need, good work Kerrie.
Right, thats some of my ideas so far, I'll put some more on later
